Necropolis and Mozarabic Hermitage of Hoyo de los Peñones

With the arrival of the Muslims in the 8th century, the Sierra de las Nieves experienced a period of development. In many cases the settlers occupied the territory peacefully, establishing a good coexistence with the ancient Christian inhabitants, the Mozarabs, whose culture is demonstrated by the cave church and necropolis of Hoyo de los Peñones, a couple of kilometres from the town centre, next to the road towards Casarabonela, in Alozaina.

This important Mozarabic complex consists of a dwelling and a semi-ruinsite church of eremitic origin, associated with a necropolis of the settlement of El Albar, dating from the 9th-10th centuries. The dwelling, excavated in a rocky outcrop, must have been the cell of the hermit who looked after the church. It has four niches carved into the stone.

The south face of the crag served as the chancel of the nave of the church, of which only the remains of the floor are left. The necropolis, located in an area very close to the church, contains one hundred and twenty-one tombs carved into the rock.

It cannot be visited at present.
