Necropolis and Mozarabic Hermitage of Hoyo de los Peñones

With the arrival of the Muslims, in the 8th century, the Sierra de las Nieves will experience a time of development. In many cases the settlers occupied the territory peacefully, establishing a good coexistence with the ancient Christian settlers, the Mozarabs, whose culture is an example of the rock church and the necropolis of Hoyo de los Peñones, a couple of kilometers from the urban area. , next to the road towards Casarabonela, in Alozaina.

This important Mozarabic complex is made up of a habitation and a semi-rupestrian church of eremitic origin, associated with a necropolis in the town of El Albar, dating from the 9th-10th centuries. The room, excavated in a rock, must have been the cell of the hermit who took care of the church. It has four niches carved into the stone.

The south face of the rock served as the head of the church nave, of which only remains of the pavement remain. The necropolis, located in an area very close to the Church, contains one hundred and twenty-one tombs excavated in the rock.
