Places to visit on the Historic Route of Alozaina

There are several places that you can enjoy in the Arab Zone of Alozaina. You are sure to be amazed by the beauty of each of these places that keep the essence of their origin.

  1. Maria Sagredo Park. This magical place allows you to have a spectacular view. From here you can see the Sierra Prieta, the Sierra de las Nieves and the Guadalhorce Valley and in the background you can see the city of Malaga. This park was a large castle from medieval times and still preserves parts of it.

Its location is due to the fact that, from there, they could defend themselves from any enemy attack. And for this very reason it is called Alozaina, as this meant “small fortress” to the Arabs.

  1. Municipal Washing Places. In ancient times, water from a spring in the Sierra Prieta was used to supply the town, which has existed here since 1951 and was used until the 1960s for water supply.

This site is also known as “Lavadero El Albar”, a name it receives due to the existence of a medieval village that was located where the spring was born.

  1. The Jorox Valley. If you are one of those people who love to visit caves, you will love this place. Here you will find the Cueva del Algarrobo and the Cueva de la Mesa, to name but a few.

In these caves, findings have been made that indicate that this place has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era. Also, in the 1940s there was a school in La Mesa, the name given to the high plateau that is located in this place.

  1. Sessile Fountain. This fountain is named after the medieval village from which the water flowed into it. It was rebuilt in 1951 and has been maintained since then.

The fountain was built by the Arabs to supply water to the castle in medieval times. A beautiful place that you cannot miss on the historical route of Alozaina.

  1. Arab Area and María Sagredo Tower. In the old Moorish area of Alozaina the Muslims left a castle and an aqueduct, whose origin is from the Albar area. During the period of Arab rule this area evolved and the inhabitants built their houses around the fortress.

Here we also find the Torreón de María Sagredo, named after the heroine who defended it from her enemies in 1570. Legend has it that there were three attempted assaults on the town by the Moors. But its residents defended the place.

Most of these people were women disguised as men. One of them was María Sagredo, who, seeing that her father had been killed, did not hesitate to take up arms and defend the Torreón with all her strength. In this way, she became the town's heroine.

  1. Church of Santa Ana. This beautiful church has been in existence for no less than five centuries. Its construction began in 1770 and it is located in the highest part of the old town of Alozaina.

At first, in the 16th century, it was built as a parish church. It was not until 1774 that it became the baroque style church it is known as today. This was thanks to the reconstruction carried out by the architect Felipe Pérez “El Menor”.

The patron saint festivities are held here on 25 and 26 July each year, in commemoration of Santa Ana and Santiago. In Alozaina there are several brotherhoods and associations, among which we can highlight that of the Blessed Sacrament.

Each of these places is sure to amaze you with their beauty. Here you will find sculptures, buildings, unique landscapes and many places to explore.
