Their location is because, from there, they could defend themselves from any enemy attack. And for this same reason it is called Alozaina, since this meant “small fortress” to the Arabs.
This site is also known as “El Albar Laundry”, a name it receives due to the existence of a medieval town that was in the place where the spring originated.
In these caves, findings have been made that indicate that this place has been populated since the Paleolithic era. Likewise, in the 1940s there was a school in La Mesa, the name given to the plateau located in this place.
The fountain was built by the Arabs to supply water to the castle in medieval times. A beautiful place that you cannot miss visiting in the Alozaina historical route.
Here is also the Torreón de María Sagredo, named after its heroine who in 1570 defended it from its enemies. Legend says that there were three attempted assaults by the Moors in the town. But its residents defended the place.
Most of these people were women disguised as men. One of them was María Sagredo, who, upon seeing that her father had been killed, did not hesitate to take up arms and defend the Tower with all her strength. In this way, she became the heroine of the town.
Initially, in the 16th century, it was built as a parish. It was not until 1774 that it became the baroque style church that is known today. This was thanks to the reconstruction that was carried out by the architect Felipe Pérez “El Menor”.
The patron saint festivities are held there on July 25 and 26 of each year, in commemoration of Santa Ana and Santiago. In Alozaina there are several brotherhoods and associations, among which we can highlight that of the Blessed Sacrament.
