Lavadero Municipal

The municipal laundries witnessed the effort and sacrifice of many women, and also served as a stage for a new way of earning a living during the second half of the 19th century, when hygiene was considered a -luxury-.

This traditionally domestic work, performed by the women of the family, mothers, daughters and wives to help with their things, gave its name to the “washerwomen”, who went around the city collecting clothes and sheets from their clients’ homes, then went to the laundry, and finally returned them, on an agreed day, clean, ironed and ready for use.
